What Readers Says About Book
In his memoir Raising the Ground, Lowering the Sky playwright and director Howard Meyer writes eloquently about growing up with a father battling mental illness. He paints a vivid portrayal of how this childhood, unpredictable and often violent, informs his passage to adulthood and his struggles with depression and ultimate his own Bipolar diagnosis. It is also a story of hope and resilience as Meyer searches for answers and solace in Buddhism, therapy and the Twelve Step programs all the while building a successful career in the arts. Raising the Ground, Lowering the Sky is an important addition to the shelf of anyone dealing with mental health issues themselves or those of a family member, or the burden of a painful family dynamic.

"Howard and I have worked together in the theatre. He brings the same deep, penetrative understanding of character to his important memoir as he did to his work on my plays."

I have known Howard Meyer for over 20 years and what I have been repeatedly inspired by is his intense, devoted quest to explore his inner truth. As I read Raising the Ground, Lowering the Sky, that man, was on full display. A man who is always doing the work, questioning, searching, and exploring life through pain and joy and emerging with full of life and a deeper understanding of self. Howard has always been an inspiration to me and many others, my hope is this deeply moving and courageous book can do the same for all who read it.
